Martin Zubimendi’s move to Liverpool is off as the midfielder has now decided he wants to stay at Real Sociedad.
The midfielder has scuppered the Reds’ transfer plans as he’s decided to stay in La Liga for at least another year.
The Reds looked to be closing in on Zubimendi, but now, the Merseyside club are back to square one.
With just three weeks left of the transfer window, Liverpool are still yet to make a signing, and, as you can imagine, Richard Hughes isn’t having the best of starts to life as the club’s Sporting Director.
Indeed, Hughes is yet to make a signing for Liverpool, and according to The Mail, he’s far from happy with how this Zubimendi deal has played out.

Why Richard Hughes is angry with Martin Zubimendi
According to The Mail, Richard Hughes is very angry with Martin Zubimendi.
The Sporting Director is said to be unhappy with the midfielder because he felt like Zubimendi had given his word that he’d come to Liverpool.
Unfortunately for the Reds, Zubimendi has reneged on his original promise, and he’s now set to stay in Spain for another year.
Liverpool still need a midfielder
Liverpool may not be landing Zubimendi this summer, but they do still need a midfield signing.
Indeed, the Reds are still short in that number six role, and while players such as Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister are capable of playing in that position, the Reds need a specialist in that position if they’re going to push for a league title.
Zubimendi would’ve been perfect for this role, but, unfortunately, Liverpool have now had to give up in their pursuit of the midfielder, much to the annoyance of Hughes.
Hughes’ first transfer window as Liverpool’s Sporting Director isn’t exactly going to plan, but he still has plenty of time to make some game-changing signings.
