Arsenal are close to signing Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori and Fabrizio Romano has provided a fresh update on where things stand.

Calafiori is on course to be Arsenal’s first big capture of the summer and after the last few weeks of constant back and forth, it does look like a deal is now close.

Reports over the weekend have suggested Calafiori has told Bologna to get the deal done with Arsenal, while David Ornstein reported on Arsenal’s urgency to get the deal done.

For Arsenal fans, landing a defending of the calibre of Calafiori will feel like a big win, especially given how good they were at the back anyway last season.

And according to Fabrizio Romano, everything looks to be in place with Arsenal now just waiting for the go-ahead.

Arsenal now waiting for green light to announce Riccardo Calafiori

Taking to X to provide the latest update on Calafiori to Arsenal, Romano has suggested that things are now more or less done, with just a green light needed from the Bologna end to finalise the deal.

Arsenal have jetted off to the USA today for their pre-season tour and there was an initial hope that Calafiori might be part of that.

Of course, should Calafiori sign officially then it would be no surprise to see the Italian flown over to be part of the tour with the rest of the squad.

Last summer saw Mikel Arteta use the summer tour to get the likes of Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber fully up to speed with the squad.

With a deal for Calafiori now looking done, it looks like the Gunners boss might have the chance to do the same again.

Arsenal are expected to use Calafiori at left-back much like they have done with Ben White on the opposite side.
