Report: Man United looking at signing £33m international to partner Kobbie Mainoo in midfield

Manchester United have made their worst start to a season since the Premier League began in 1992.

Manchester United have won just two of their opening seven league games and reside in the bottom half of the table.

That’s put a lot of pressure on Erik ten Hag, who was close to being dismissed by INEOS after the FA Cup triumph earlier this year.

TBR Football previously revealed that Man United are back in contact with Thomas Tuchel to potentially replace ten Hag.

So, the Ducthman’s future is far from secure but behind the scenes, work is already being carried out on the transfer front.

With that said, it’s just emerged that United have identified a midfielder ahead of the January transfer window.

Manchester United interested in Leon Goretzka

According to FootballTransfers, Manchester United are showing an interest in Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka.

Goretzka has been made surplus to requirements by newly-appointed Bayern boss Vincent Kompany and United have been alerted by his availability.

The Red Devils value the Germany international at £33m as his contract ticks into the final 18 months.

It’s believed United are keen to partner Kobbie Mainoo with an experienced player and Goretzka has been identified as the ideal man.

TBR have previously reported that West Ham are also keen on signing Goretzka.

Leon Goretzka compliments Kobbie Mainoo perfectly

Goretzka’s FBref statistics are really impressive.

The 29-year-old ranks in the top nine per cent for progressive carries per 90 compared to his positional peers across Europe.

Further, Goretzka sits in the top six per cent for blocks per 90, evincing his defensive abilities, too, which would compliment Mainoo nicely.

Data suggests he’s of a similar profile to Arsenal’s Declan Rice, interestingly.
