Martin Zubimendi’s failed move to Liverpool is a story shrouded in mystery as the Reds failed to sign the Spaniard.

Zubimendi has opted to stay at Real Sociedad for another season, and the details of why this deal fell apart aren’t clear.

Now, Fabrizio Romano has shared an interesting update on this story.

Indeed, according to the journalist, speaking on his YouTube channel, the Reds actually tried to broker a part-exchange deal to sign Zubimendi.

According to Romano, Liverpool discussed the idea of sending Stefan Bajcetic out on loan to Real Sociedad to compensate for the loss of Zubimendi, but, ultimately, this deal fell apart.

Liverpool considered sending Stefan Bajcetic to Real Sociedad on loan

Romano shared what he knows about Liverpool’s failed move for Zubimendi.

“Let me tell you something behind the scenes of this story. At one point in the conversation they also discussed the possibility to include Stefan Bajcetic as part of the negotiation,” Romano said.

“There was a possibility to include him in the deal on loan. But Liverpool preferred to pay the release clause. Everything collapsed immediately in terms of a swap deal because Real Sociedad only wanted to keep Martin Zubimendi and they were successful.”

Zubimendi – Bajcetic deal would’ve been perfect

This would’ve been such a good deal for Liverpool.

Not only would the Reds have been getting a fantastic player in Zubimendi, they’d have been sending Bajcetic to a team where he’d get top-level minutes in a role that suits him to a tee.

Bajcetic would return on one year’s time as a much more well-rounded player, while Zubimendi would’ve been excellent in the middle of the park.

Unfortunately, this deal didn’t come off, but Liverpool should still be trying to find a landing spot for Bajcetic on loan this summer as the ‘brilliant’ midfielder needs to develop his game more if he’s to break into the Liverpool side.
