Liverpool about to hold 'one more meeting' about signing 'outstanding' player - Fabrizio Romano

Liverpool’s hunt to secure their first signing of the Arne Slot era remains ongoing.

The Reds were expected to be very active in this summer’s transfer window, but they haven’t signed a single player yet.

Liverpool fans are getting a bit frustrated and rightly so. The Martin Zubimendi rejection was a massive blow, and they now have to find alternative targets.

However, the Reds’ current priority seems to be to sign a new goalkeeper.

Liverpool schedule meeting to discuss signing Giorgi Mamardashvili

Giorgi Mamardashvili emerged as a surprise target for Liverpool this summer, and Fabrizio Romano has shared an update on GiveMeSport.

The Reds have Alisson Becker in goal, while Caoimhin Kelleher is also still at the club despite rumours claiming he could leave in this window.

That, on paper, is enough, but Mamardashvili is being eyed as a player for the future of Liverpool – they want to sign him now and then immediately loan him out.

Reports have claimed that Liverpool are in pole position to sign Mamardashvili this summer, and Romano has now shared some more details.

The journalist has revealed that Liverpool are set to hold ‘one more meeting’ this week to see if they can get the deal over the line to sign the keeper, who was branded as ‘outstanding’ by Ange Postecoglou during ITV’s coverage of Georgia vs Portugal (26 June) at Euro 2024.

As for the player, Mamardashvili is ‘ready to say yes’ to Liverpool this summer.

Romano said: “Mamardashvili, there will be one more meeting this week. There are contacts, very active contacts ongoing.

“It’s on Liverpool, basically. So, they need to decide what they want to do. They have this possibility. It’s on the table. It’s available.

“Mamardashvili is keen on a move to Liverpool, with a loan as the next step. So not going to Liverpool immediately, but being a future Liverpool player.”

Liverpool still need to address one key issue

A top-class goalkeeper like Mamardashvili for the future is all well and good, but Liverpool need to focus on one key issue they have.

The Reds felt they had a deal done to sign Zubimendi, but just like it happened with Moises Caicedo in 2023, they have missed out on him.

There remains a big hole in that number six position at Liverpool, and it is one they must address to have any chance of being in the title race.

However, as things stand, it looks like Liverpool don’t have any alternatives to Zubimendi, and that could cost them in the 2024/25 season.
