Newcastle United’s summer transfer window is in desperate need of some magic from Paul Mitchell over the coming weeks.
Of course, Eddie Howe‘s side came into the summer market knowing they were on the back foot due to the PSR concerns.
However, Newcastle have now been out of the woods financially for over a month and are yet to really make a splash in the market.
Last season was an important one for the Magpies as it provided them with Champions League football on Tyneside for the first time in two decades.
But their lack of squad depth – resulting in injuries – also provided the Toon with a major reality check ahead of the window with their squad just not deep enough.
With less than a month before the window shuts, Fabrizio Romano has just shared his understanding on what is expected at St James’ Park in the market.
What Fabrizio Romano expects from Newcastle in the transfer market
So far this summer, Newcastle have only been able to bring in Lloyd Kelly to really play a potential role in the starting XI.
The free agent aside, the Toon have only been able to bring in two backup goalkeepers in John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos.
It’s worth noting that a lot of changes have happened behind the scenes at Newcastle with Amanda Staveley and Dan Ashworth both leaving the club.
But there has been one major positive with Mitchell arriving at the club to head up Newcastle’s recruitment team.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle could be busy over the coming weeks as they are now needing to make up for weeks of missed opportunities.
“At the moment, internal conversations are taking place. So, Marc Guehi could be one to watch for sure for Newcastle, because they want to add one more defensive player,” Romano told GiveMeSport.
“Meanwhile, they have signed William Osula from Sheffield United, and so I think Newcastle will be another club busy in the final weeks.”
Newcastle need a strong end to the transfer window
The biggest plus so far of the summer for Newcastle is Howe looks set to be going into the new season with his top players still at the club.
There is, of course, still time for that to change.
However, that is a big positive but it should not deter from the fact that Newcastle still need to make their mark in this window.
Newcastle are said to have lodged a second bid for Marc Guehi which would certainly provide the fans with something to shout about.
But time is beginning to run out and the pressure will be starting to mount on Mitchell who is yet to make any deals happen.
