For much of last season it looked as if Tottenham Hotspur would be joining Liverpool in one of the league’s four Champions League spots.
Ange Postecoglou’s side even looked like they might launch a shock bid for the Premier League title after ten or so games.
However, as Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side improved and climbed the table, Postecoglou was hit with an injury crisis in north London.
And even once the likes of James Maddison and Micky van de Ven were back fit, all momentum had been lost.
Tottenham have already completed a move for Archie Gray to strengthen their chances this season, however, all has been disappointingly quiet ever since.
And the same can be said on Merseyside since Arne Slot’s arrival, given Liverpool haven’t welcomed a single new signing.
Unlike Liverpool, who are well stocked in the area, many believe that Tottenham need to sell Richarlison and buy a new striker, someone who can score regularly.
And Postecoglou’s side are now being advised that man should Brentford’s Ivan Toney.
Tottenham can steal Liverpool’s Champions League spot if they sign Ivan Toney
Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony has been talking about the prospect of Toney signing for Spurs on talkSPORT recently.
Tottenham are only prepared to pay a small fee for Toney this summer, but MacAnthony’s words would perhaps suggest that the club should be chasing the striker at all costs.

The chairman claimed that he genuinely believed that Postecoglou’s side could finish above Liverpool if they signed Toney, stealing one of the Champions League spots.
MacAnthony said: “If Spurs buy Ivan Toney, I honestly think they will finish above Liverpool and might nick the Champions League spot. That’s my concern.”
Of course, with just five or so weeks remaining of the transfer window, many Tottenham fans may agree with those sentiments, believing it’s time to pull the trigger on a move for Toney.
Thomas Frank has admitted Toney could leave, and the England international surprisingly seems to have very few suitors this summer.
So although Spurs may need to pay more than the £40m fee mentioned above, a deal for the 28-year-old could still be more than worthwhile – especially given that PSG look set to beat Tottenham to one attacker.
