West Ham remain in the market for further reinforcement despite the summer transfer window being closed.
The Hammers, who reside in 14th, haven’t made the best start to the new Premier League season and Julen Lopetegui is now keen to add another centre-back to his ranks.
Free agents can still be signed even outside of the transfer window and the club are now considering making an offer for one.
West Ham are considering making an offer to sign Joel Matip
According to talkSPORT, West Ham United are considering a move for former Liverpool defender Joel Matip, who is currently a free agent.
Matip left The Reds in July upon the expiry of his contract and despite being linked to a whole host of clubs in the Premier League, he is still yet to find his next club.
The 33-year-old has been offered to Wolves and Fulham, though, neither have agreed a deal as it stands.
It’s thought Matip, who is considered ‘world class’ per Goal, is keen to stay in the Premier League, so any forthcoming talks with West Ham should be fairly straightforward.
Joel Matip injury record a concern
Matip was plagued by injury last term as he sustained a cruciate ligament tear, so West Ham should assess his fitness levels before putting him on a substantial contract.
He’s made just 21 Premier League starts over the last two seasons, so if he were to join, Lopetegui would need to manage his minutes, accordingly.
