The trend of Liverpool being snubbed in the transfer market looks set to continue with one of their summer targets set to extend his stay at his current club.
The Reds look set to suffer another transfer blow after missing out on a number of midfield targets in recent windows.
Liverpool were rejected by Martin Zubimendi this summer despite being willing to pay his release clause at Real Sociedad.
Teun Koopmeiners has also hinted that he rejected Liverpool this summer, and the pattern even goes back to previous transfer windows after Liverpool targeted Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia before their moves to Chelsea.
Arne Slot eventually did get a transfer deal over the line this summer with Liverpool completing a bargain £10m deal for Federico Chiesa, but overall it was a fairly underwhelming window for the Merseyside club.

Fabrizio Romano shares Jamal Musiala update
There was a feeling that Liverpool could complete a marquee signing over the summer and they were linked with a move for Jamal Musiala.
The Bayern Munich youngster was valued at £96m over the summer and ultimately Liverpool never pushed to get a deal over the line.
If there are still any Liverpool fans hoping that the “incredible” Musiala would eventually end up at Anfield, their hopes and dreams have just suffered a big blow.
Fabrizio Romano, via Caught Offside, has revealed that Bayern are confident of keeping hold of Musiala and tying him down to a new contract.
Musiala’s current deal with the Bundesliga giants runs until 2026, but he is set to extend his stay even further.
“Bayern are confident, they want Musiala to stay and his contact is a really important topic for the board, they simply can’t fail on this mission. Negotiations are ongoing, but it’s too early to say how it will finish.” Romano said.
Liverpool may need big-name signing next summer
Mohamed Salah’s contract situation is like a dark cloud hanging over Liverpool. Regardless of their bright start to the season, Salah’s future has been the biggest talking point.
Liverpool have already sourced a reasonable replacement in Chiesa, but they may need a big-name signing to replace Salah’s role at the club and Musiala fits the bill.

However, Liverpool have shown plenty of times that they are not willing to overpay for their targets so if Musiala has committed his future to Bayern then the Reds may have to look elsewhere.
They adopted a patient approach to this summer’s window but that simply won’t be possible next year if Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Salah are all headed for the exit.
