Liverpool’s transfer window has not been what many of they fans will have hoped for in Arne Slot’s first summer at Anfield.

The Reds got off to a flying start in the Premier League on the weekend with three points against newly-promoted Ipswich Town.

However, they have been stagnant when it comes to the transfer window with Liverpool the only side in the Premier League not to have signed a single player.

Arne Slot would have been hopeful Martin Zubimendi would have signed for Liverpool but he rejected their proposal.

This has left the Reds with just over a week to tie up their loose ends in the window before seeing it shut until January.

However, it seems as if the Reds are now optimistic they are going to be able to seal their first signing of thw window very soon.

Liverpool growing in confidence of landing first summer signing

When it comes to what Liverpool needed this summer, a new midfielder was clearly high up on Slot’s agenda given their pursuit of Zubimendi.

However, Liverpool now find themselves looking to strengthen their defence of their own goal with a player who excelled at this summer’s Euros.

Despite potentially needing to strengthen at centre-back after losing Joel Matip, Fabrizio Romano has claimed Liverpool are eyeing a new goalkeeper.

According to the Italian journalist, Liverpool are now confident of landing Giorgi Mamardashvili with a deal for the shot stopper close.

“As I said above, Giorgi Mamardashvili is no longer going to Bournemouth, with the idea being that Liverpool could sign him before he then goes back on loan to Valencia until summer 2025. Mamardashvili has already said yes to Liverpool, and yes to the possibility of staying at Valencia on loan, so it’s close,” Romano said in his Daily Briefing.

“The clubs are now trying to complete the final details of the deal, with Alisson to stay as the Liverpool number one for this season. There is still some work to do, but Mamardashvili is close to Liverpool and there is optimism to make it happen.”

Liverpool close to signing ‘outstanding’ Giorgi Mamardashvili

Of course, Liverpool are not currently in a position where they need a new starting goalkeeper with Alisson Becker currently between the sticks.

However, in Mamardashvili, Liverpool would be adding an ‘outstanding‘ goalkeeper who could be their long-term successor for their current number one.

It has to be remembered Mamardashvili is still just 23-years-old and would not be arriving as the first choice at Anfield.

As Romano says, the Georgia international would head back off on loan for the 2024/25 campaign where he would continue his development potentially until Alisson heads off.

Although Liverpool fans will want to see big signings which could boost their hopes of winning the title this season, this does feel like a smart move for the long-term.
