Aston Villa have largely been successful with recruitment this summer – but Unai Emery has now missed out on a transfer target.
The Villans have managed to bring Amadou Onana, Ian Maatsen, Ross Barkley, Samuel Iling-Junior, Enzo Barrenechea, Jaden Philogene, Cameron Archer and Lewis Dobbin to Villa Park.
However, one of Europe’s top talents will not be joining these eight players at Aston Villa after he agreed to move elsewhere…
Maximilian Beier rejects Aston Villa for Borussia Dortmund
Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that Maximilian Beier has chosen to leave TSG Hoffenheim for Borussia Dortmund in a €30m (£25.7m) move.
The Germany international will sign a five-year contract once his medical is complete.
It comes after Florian Plettenburg of Sky Germany revealed that Aston Villa had made a bid for Beier – and left that offer on the table as the German considered his future.
Now – however – the man from Brandenburg has opted to stay in Germany by joining Borussia Dortmund.
Liverpool were also keen to sign Beier before the 21-year-old made his decision.
The Borussia Dortmund new boy put his name up in lights last season with 16 goals in 33 Bundesliga appearances for TSG Hoffenheim – a return which earned him a place in Julian Nagelsmann’s UEFA Euro 2024 squad.
Unai Emery has backup options
There are two strikers Aston Villa have also been strongly linked to, who Emery could now look to sign instead of Beier.
One of those is a player the Villa Park faithful know well, as Il Romanista believe Aston Villa are in pole position to sign Tammy Abraham this summer if he decides on a return to England.
Roma are looking to sell the England international for a fee of £21m as they must raise funds, according to Corriere dello Sport.

Another option is Crystal Palace No.14 Jean-Philippe Mateta, who the Express believe has been the subject of an enquiry from Aston Villa.
The pair are slightly different forwards in comparison to Beier, who is actually quicker than Kyle Walker, although they would still offer plenty to Emery in attack if a deal were to materialise.
