Liverpool don’t often overspend in the transfer window.
Indeed, a lot of the Reds business is very clever. Many of their recent signings have been brought in off the back of triggering release clauses.
Meanwhile, other arrivals such as Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo were signed earlier than planned due to competition within the Premier League.
Liverpool don’t often go crazy in the transfer window, but every now and then they do have a tendency to make a big move.
Last summer, the Reds bid £111m for Moises Caicedo, and while that deal didn’t get over the line, it showed that Liverpool were ready to spend a huge amount on one player.
Speaking on NUFC Matters, Ben Jacobs has been discussing Liverpool’s recent links with Anthony Gordon.
Jacobs says that he does think Gordon will stay at Newcastle, but he has this nagging feeling in his head that Liverpool could make a Caicedo-type move for the winger at some point.
Indeed, Jacobs says that the word he’s currently getting on Gordon is eerily similar to what he was hearing about Caicedo last year.
Liverpool could make Anthony Gordon move
Jacobs shared his verdict on the £40m man after speaking to his sources.
“The only sort of 1% I have in my head, speaking to sources, is that Liverpool are usually consistent in not putting down big money or more than they feel he is worth. But occasionally, they make exceptions as they did 12 months ago with Moises Caicedo,” Jacobs said.
“Sources indicated that Caicedo was too expensive, they liked the player, but not the price, and now, again, sources from the Liverpool camp that I’m speaking to are saying that they like the player and not the price.”

Liverpool have the money to sign Anthony Gordon
These Anthony Gordon links have been discussed over and over, but what mustn’t be forgotten is that Liverpool do have the money to make this one happen.
That £111m Caicedo money wasn’t spent last summer. Ryan Gravenberch was signed for £35m in the end, but it doesn’t take a genius to tell you that there’s a lot of cash leftover after that deal.
Factor in that the Reds haven’t made a signing yet this summer, and there may well be a healthy budget in place to go out and get Gordon.
Don’t be surprised if a big Liverpool bid does go in for the winger at some point.
