One young talent at Liverpool has actually shocked Arne Slot in training sessions this summer.

The Dutchman is currently taking a good look at his squad during pre-season to assess who will start the Premier League opener against Ipswich on Saturday 17th August at Portman Road.

So, which Liverpool youngster has exceeded Arne Slot‘s expectations? Let’s take a look…

Sepp van den Berg shocks Arne Slot

A story from The Athletic now states that Slot has been shocked and taken aback by Sepp van den Berg.

The Netherlands U21 international has returned from his loan spell at Mainz 05 in fine fettle, as he is said to have blown his fellow countryman away with his maturity and technical ability in training.

Van den Berg appeared to have no future at Liverpool after recently holding an explosive interview with De Telegraaf – in which he bemoaned the £20m price tag on his head, suggesting those at Anfield were causing his career to stagnate.

Now – however – the Dutchman looks to have worked himself into a favourable position under Slot, which comes at a convenient time seeing as Joel Matip has just departed Anfield, leaving a vacancy in the central defence department.

Liverpool must decide soon

Liverpool need to decide whether to keep the man from Zwolle at Anfield for the 2024/25 season or cash in, as the 22-year-old’s stock is currently very high after an impressive 2023/24 campaign.

Van den Berg was actually – statistically – the best performing U23 player in Europe’s top five divisions last term, according to WhoScored.

A story from Eindhovens Dagblad states that PSV Eindhoven are willing to break their transfer record and spend €16m (£13.4m) to sign Van den Berg, a respectable sum, albeit one that is well below Liverpool’s £20m asking price.

However, if the defender spends an entire season on the bench, Liverpool are unlikely to receive a £13.4m bid for him next summer, so those at Anfield need to decide what to do with this exciting talent.
