Arsenal could sign £55m player by not even telling his club but Newcastle keep 'calling' to win race - Romano

With Arsenal’s chances of winning silverware looking slim this season, perhaps a crucial reason why that is the case is because their transfer activity across both windows.

The summer signings that were provided to Mikel Arteta to transform his Gunners side including Riccardo Calafiori, Mikel Merino and Raheem Sterling are yet to hit the ground running.

Meanwhile, Gary Neville slated Arsenal recently for not bringing in any first-team signings in the winter transfer window as well.

But in the summer of 2025, Arsenal are expected to make moves to reinforce their squad.

Especially if the North Londoners fail to lift the Premier League title for the third time in a row with Liverpool looking favourites to write their name into the history books, it would be a shock if they decided to be largely inactive in the transfer market.

Newcastle “calling constantly” to sign Arsenal target Dean Huijsen

Earlier this month, TBR Football were informed that Arsenal were keeping tabs on Dean Huijsen from AFC Bournemouth alongside Newcastle United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur — who has a £55 million release clause in his contract that becomes active this summer.

Huijsen has been one of the most in-form centre-backs in the league this season and 19 years of age, it seems like his potential is sky-high.

But Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Newcastle are “calling constantly” to try and sign the Arsenal target, with Chelsea also hugely interested and Bayern Munich being informed about his future.

Romano discussed Huijsen’s future on his official YouTube channel: “Important to say that many clubs are starting to call. I told you in January that Chelsea are monitoring the player closely, he’s for sure on the list. Bayern called about the player to be informed on the clause conditions.”

“So, Bayern are also following the situation of the player, but now the focus is on extending the contract of Dayot Upamecano, the conversations are advancing very well, so the expectation is for Upamecano to sign a new deal. Also Newcastle are informed, calling constantly about the situation of Huijsen. So for sure there will be many clubs in the race for this player.”

It seems like Mikel Arteta’s side are working to bolster several areas of their squad, with Arsenal backing themselves to sign Benjamin Sesko as their brand-new striker as well.

Dean Huijsen has already hinted at his future plans

If the decision came down to either signing for Arsenal or Newcastle, Huijsen would perhaps likely pick a move to London due to them being one of the best teams in the world.

But so far, the former Juventus defender has not finalised where his future lies.

But an interview with The Guardian last month, Huijsen admitted that he would love to play European football with Bournemouth next season, suggesting he wishes to stay at the Vitality Stadium.

“Who wouldn’t want to play in Europe? I think everyone would like that. It would go down in the history of the club. It would be great for all of the players, fans and everyone involved. I think it is realistic with how we are playing.”

“We are doing well and all of the stats show that it’s not just luck and we deserve to be here. We just need to keep on working hard, stay humble and continue proving ourselves.”

With Bournemouth sitting in fifth place, perhaps Huijsen’s mind is already made up about being a part of a burgeoning project which could be heartbreaking for both Arsenal and Newcastle.
