‘Absolutely’: Tottenham could sign ‘dominant’ midfielder at the end of the season – journalist

Tottenham Hotspur have some work to do on their squad.

Indeed, Spurs are sitting in mid-table in the Premier League, and they simply aren’t good enough at the moment.

Luckily, Daniel Levy hasn’t been shy about spending money in recent years as he’s backed Ange Postecoglou with plenty of signings.

Postecoglou has spent hundreds of millions at Spurs so far, and further reinforcements could be on the way.

Milan Skriniar has been linked to Spurs, while another defensive-minded player could be on the way too.

Indeed, speaking on The Spurs Chat Podcast, Josh Hughes has suggested that Johnny Cardoso could be on his way to Tottenham at the end of the season.

Johnny Cardoso to Tottenham could happen at the end of the season

The journalist spoke about Cardoso and a potential move to Tottenham.

Spurs have a clause to sign Cardoso should they wish to, and Hughes believes that clause could be triggered in the summer.

“Johnny Cardoso, the Betis and USA player. He’s 23 years old and Spurs have a clause to buy him for £21m as a part of their deal for Giovani Lo Celso. Everyone I know who watches La Liga says he’s an impressive player and he’s one to watch. He’s dominant in the air and on the ball,” Hughes said.

“With that deal we have for £21m, I think that is one to watch. Not in January, but he’s one we absolutely could sign in the summer.”

As Hughes says, Cardoso is a dominant player, and that is certainly reflected in his stats.

The American isn’t one to shy away from his defensive responsibilities. In fact, he loves a tackle and an interception.

Tackles per game1.9
Interceptions per game1.9
Aerial duels won per game0.5

Interestingly, Hughes has heard that Cardoso is dominant in the air, but the numbers tell a different story.

Despite standing at 6 ft 1, Cardoso only wins 0.5 aerial duels per game, and that isn’t ideal for a combative midfielder in the Premier League.

Yves Bissouma has struggled as of late, so a new holding midfield player should be a priority for Spurs in the upcoming transfer windows, and given that they’ve already agreed a deal to sign Cardoso on the cheap, they may want to get this one done.

Unfortunately, this won’t be one for the January transfer window, but, next summer, we could well see the American make his way to the Premier League with Tottenham.
